HYHC is the Fiji component of four-Country Obesity Prevention in Communities (OPIC) project. The HYHC project targets youth and the community to promote healthy choices. HYHC is trailing community-based intervention activities within the schools and the Nasinu community where the walk took place. These interventions promote appropriate policies, practises within the schools and the community to increase physical activity and improve diet among adolescents.

However, due to the water crisis the schools in Nakasi area closed and unfortunately, the pupils from the Nasinu Muslim College, Bhawani Dayal College and Nakasi High School were not able to participate in the event.

The Chief Guest was the Director of Road Safety Council Mr. Akapusi Tuifagalele who talked about the international walk and its purposes. In his speech he invited all the schools in Fiji to join the “iwalk” to encourage  students to develop a healthy habit of walking to school as part of their physical activity of the day.

Various activities planned for the day were carried out in Ahmadiyya Muslim College, a school located in Narere, Nasinu with about 300 pupils and 50 teachers / supporters such the members of the police force, Town Council, Road Safety council and community leaders, parents and FSMed.

Information handouts on Safe walk, Physical Activity, water and fruit as well as notice for the parents to inform them on the events of the day especially, the consent for the walk.
The day officially started off with a prayer by a student and the National Anthem lead by the Fiji Police Band. This was followed by the introduction of the event. Students were holding the banner that read “Its Cool to Walk to School”.

The walk commenced at about 12 noon preceded by warm up. The students sang and clapped to the tunes played by the Fiji Police Band, as they walked the 2.5km distance with the community leaders despite the rain! The walk attracted a lot of attention from members of the surroundings communities, especially parents of students from Ahmadiyya Muslim College.

The students were transported to the host school and back to their respective schools at the end of the event. Refreshments consisted of fruits (watermelon and apples) and egg/lettuce/tomato sandwiches and lots of water.

The event was supported by the Ministry of Health, Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) program (T-shirts for all students, resource materials, water, fruits and transport was provided in order for all schools to participate), the Principal, Student Assistance Council, teachers and students of Ahmadiyya College, for hosting the program in the middle of an examination period, Mrs. Vizo Halavatau for warming up and cooling down the students for before and after the walk.
