2. During the European Mobility Week from September 16 to 22, 2008, kindergartens and primary schools in Liechtenstein participated at the “I walk to school” week. Teachers focused the attention of the children on the journey to school. Parents accompanied their children walking to school to the final event with attendance of politicians and town authorities on September 22. The pictures show details of the activities in the schools of Mauren and Schaanwald.
4. Initiative "Taxi Parents": Walking Safely and Independently to School
The independent daily journey to and from school is a crucial element of a favorable physical and social development of our children. It is full of adventures and represents not only a sphere for emotional and social exploration, but also an unsupervised space between school and family.
The VCL (Association for Transport and Environment Liechtenstein) is disseminating colorful and attractively designed cards to interested parties such as Parent-Teacher Organizations. The VCL is asking such groups to hand out the cards to those parents regularly driving their children to school. The aim of this initiative: making the journey to and from school safer and healthier for all children.
5. The VCL was a partner in the Interreg III B "Alpine Space" project of the EU: "VIANOVA -- Healthy Mobility and Intelligent Intermodality in Alpine Areas".
Within this framework, we conducted a project with the title "Enjoy the way to school -- independently & safely". The project was realized in close cooperation with kindergartens, the primary school, and the parent-teacher organization of the town of Balzers.
The goal of the project:
- Parents recognize the significance of an independent journey to school for the physical, psychological and social development of their children.
- The number of parents doing the school run by car is reduced. More children are allowed to enjoy their way to school.
6. The children expressed their experiences, their joys and fears during the journey to school in colorful drawings.
Dr. Marco Hüttenmoser made a scientific evaluation of the drawings and published the findings in a brochure. This brochure is available at the VCL.
As a summary, the VCL published a flyer outlining the issues with drawings from the project for visualization.
