In 2004, Chile participated in “I walk to school day” for the second time.

Our motto in Chile was “find your way to school, walk,“ focusing the activity on teaching children to go to school safely and responsibly. So, if students did not know their way to school or simply did not walk it, since they were taken to school by a parent or a school bus, now they found their way and learned how to take it.

The main event took place in the “Liahona“ school, located on the Gran Avenida, in “El Bosque“ -a district in the suburbs of Santiago de Chile. One thousand students -ranging from Kinder garden to eighth grade- clad in their yellow sport gear, walked carrying yellow balloons, signifying they were the sidewalk. High school students carrying red balloons, stood at the corners signifying the places children could carefully cross, and on those corners where there were traffic lights, some other high school students, carrying green balloons, meant to remind what light allowed people to cross the streets. The party walked 2 km. (1 and a quarter mile), lead by "Segurito" (the mascot of the Safety Association of Chile) following the "pedestrian map". School authorities, teachers, as well as sponsors like Carabineros de Chile -the Chilean Police, Ministerio de Educación de Chile –Education Secretary, and Comision Nacional de Seguridad del Transito –National Traffic Safety Commission.

It was a great event.

Chile is now preparing the 2005 walk, where we expect to adjoin a greater quantity of schools.

So far, and until October, we propose a “Virtual Walk,” so that school children who are getting ready for such event, get in touch through the Internet and let us know about their preparation, and later share their experiences, postcards, drawings, photographs, etc.

EN 2004, CHILE PARTICIPÓ POR SEGUNDA VEZ en “I walk to school day”.

El slogan en Chile este año fue "encuentra el camino al colegio, camina", poniendo al centro de la actividad el enseñar a los niños a desplazarse a su colegio en forma segura y responsable. Así, si antes el estudiante no conocía el camino a su colegio, o simplemente no lo caminaba, porque llegaba a la puerta de su colegio en el auto del papá o en el transporte escolar, ahora tuvo la oportunidad de encontrar esa ruta y de aprender a caminarla.

El EVENTO CENTRAL se realizó en la comuna El Bosque, provincia de Santiago de Chile, en el colegio Liahona de Gran Avda, donde caminaron 1000 niños, de Kinder a 8º básico, todos vistieron sus uniformes de educación física, color amarillo. Caminaron con globos amarillos representando la acera, en las esquinas se ubicaron niños mayores de enseñanza media con globos rojos representando el lugar de cuidado por donde debían cruzar y el las esquinas con semáforos se ubicaron jóvenes con globos verdes para familiarizarlos con la luz que les autorizaba atravesar. La caravana recorrió 2 Klm de acuerdo a su "mapa peatonal", encabezados por Segurito (mascota símbolo de la Asociación Chilena de Seguridad). Además, participaron todas las autoridades del colegio, su Director y profesores y también los organismos patrocinadores: CARABINEROS DE CHILE, MINISTERIO DE EDUCACION DE CHILE, Y COMISION NACIONAL DE SEGURIDAD DEL TRANSITO.

Fue un evento espectacular.

Chile está preparando la caminata para este año 2005, donde esperamos sumar a mas colegios de todo el país.

Proponemos hacer una “CAMINATA VIRTUAL” desde ahora hasta octubre, para que los niños de los colegios que se estén preparando para este día se contacten vía Internet y comenten acerca de sus preparativos y posteriormente intercambien experiencias, dibujos, postales, fotos, etc.
